A significant decrease in the number of drowning victims has been observed in central Germany this year

Statistics show a notable decrease in the number of drowning victims in Germany this year, both at the national level and in central Germany.

However, the results of the latest report from the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG) varied regarding the states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.

The number of drownings is decreasing in Germany

A significant decrease in the number of drowning victims has been observed in central Germany this year

Preliminary figures from the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG) indicate that the number of individuals who died due to swimming accidents in central Germany during the first seven months of this year was lower than in 2022.

Up until July 25th, 18 individuals have died in lakes and rivers, which is a decrease of ten people compared to the same period last year. This decline is primarily attributed to lower numbers in Saxony.

A significant decrease in drowning incidents has been observed in Saxony

According to the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG), at least six people have died from drowning in Saxony from January to July. In the corresponding months of the previous year, the number was 14.

Four out of the six who died were males. In the entire previous year, at least 18 individuals died in Saxony as a result of swimming accidents.

Seven cases of death occurred in Saxony-Anhalt

Seven individuals have died so far this year in lakes and rivers in Saxony-Anhalt, the same number as from January to July 2022, according to DLRG statistics. Four people died in lakes, two in rivers, and one in a canal.

Five recorded deaths occurred in Thuringia

Thuringia has witnessed a decrease in drowning deaths, with six individuals dying in pools, rivers, and other lakes from January to July 2023. In comparison, there have been five recorded drowning deaths so far this year, with three fatalities occurring in lakes and two in rivers.

There was one recorded case in January when a 22-year-old woman and her 13-year-old brother drowned in a frozen lake in the district of Hildburghausen.

The lower number of drowning-related deaths on a national level is attributed to the early onset of summer.

National statistics also revealed a decrease in the number of drowning-related deaths: 192, which is 21 fewer than the corresponding period of the previous year.

DLRG President, Ota Vogt, stated that summer had already paused for a long time, otherwise the number of drowning victims would likely have been close to the figure registered in the previous year.

In the entire year of 2022, at least 355 people died in Germany in pools, lakes, and rivers.
